Riding charity spurred on by generous donation

A Bristol-based equestrian charity has received funding from one of the UK’s leading housebuilders.

The Avon Riding Centre for the disabled has been given £750 by Persimmon Homes Severn Valley as part of the company’s Healthy Communities initiative, which provides money to young sporting groups and individuals across the region.

Every year, the centre helps more than 300 disabled people to enjoy riding and spending time with horses in specialist therapeutic sessions.

Persimmon’s donation will go towards improving the facility by increasing accessibility and the services available to riders.

Yvette Whiffen, Centre Manager for Avon Riding Centre, said: “So many individuals rely on Avon Riding Centre as a place to exercise, relax and to enjoy themselves in an environment where they are less restricted.

“All riders at the centre are challenged to achieve their best, at their own pace, whether it be a 30-minute lesson or competing at regional and even national level, the opportunities are endless.

“All funding is vital to the running of the centre and the money from Persimmon Homes will we can buy new ‘numnahs’. A piece of equipment that goes between the horse and its saddle, making the ride more comfortable for the horse - and a happy horse is a happy rider.”

“Horse riding provides a range of physical benefits including increased muscle tone in the legs and core, flexibility and balance, as well as extensive psychological benefits improving overall wellbeing.

“We hope this donation will make a real difference and we’re delighted to be able to support this cause.”
