Care home staff throw surprise 70th birthday party for long serving colleague

Staff and residents from a Hedon care home came together to celebrate the birthday of one of their longest serving staff members.

Pat Thompson, who has worked for Albemarle Care Home as a carer and a chef for 22 years, was thrown a special surprise 70th birthday party by her colleagues and the residents of Albemarle.

Colleagues and residents decorated the care home library with photos, made a cake and created an impressive birthday buffet for the celebrations.

Despite the majority of staff and residents at Albemarle being fans of Hull City FC rugby team, they pushed rivalry to one side for the day to help Hull Kingston Rovers fan Pat celebrate her birthday. A Hull KR banner was put up in the library, and Pat was gifted vouchers to spend on her favourite rugby team known as The Robins.

Albemarle chef Pat, said: “As much as we joke about my support for the red and whites, I work with a great bunch of people who I have grown very close to. We are like a family here which is great for both the residents and the staff.

“I can’t believe how much effort everyone went to. It was definitely a memorable day.”

Penni Brown, chief executive of Hica group said: “Pat has worked at Albemarle for a long time, and in that time she has become a fantastic member of the team and a great friend to her colleagues and residents of Albemarle. The team really showed how much she means to all of them by throwing a very thoughtful and personal party to celebrate her birthday.” Hica Group operates a portfolio of 19 residential care homes, five of which are for people with a learning disability, along with two retirement villages. The company also runs a home care service providing approximately 11,500 hours of support and care from four regional offices in the North of England.
