New jobs as Darlington firm continues to rise

High-level maintenance and restoration experts, Stone Technical Services (STS), have created three new jobs, recruiting two apprentices and a trainee building survey specialist.

Matt Wright, from Barnard Castle, gained a degree in building surveying at Northumbria University and joins STS working across all divisions as a trainee building survey specialist. He’ll be working on a variety of projects such as Colchester Roman Boundary Walls and the Royal Courts Of Justice.

Thomas Dixon and Curtis Mullholland join STS as apprentice steeplejacks and will work on projects including Ineos, various heritage buildings and at the Forth Road Bridge.

Thomas, from Darlington, qualified with a BTEC level 3 extended diploma in engineering and is now working towards his NVQ training qualification for steeplejacks.

And Curtis Mulholland, also from Darlington, has a VTCT level 3 diploma in gym instruction, health and fitness and fitness instruction. Curtis is continuing with his studies at STS by starting his NVQ training qualification for steeplejacks.

STS’s is made up of five divisions- STS RopeSpec, STS Lightning Protection, STS Restoration, STS Maintenance and Facilities Management and STS Conservation.

The company is currently working on a number of large-scale projects across the UK for organisations such as Sustrans, Newcastle City Council, Southwark Cathedral, Thames Water and the Royal Courts of Justice.

Managing director of STS, Dave Stone, said: “We’re passionate about creating opportunities for local people and we always recruit from the North East. Training the next generation to be able to work in restoration and maintenance is vital as buildings and structures will always need repairing. The three new recruits are really enthusiastic about their trade and it’s a really exciting time for them to be joining the business.”

The last 12 months have seen STS has experience its most successful year to date with a 20% year-on-year growth. The company has seen its turnover increase from around £2 million to over £3 million in the last 12 months and staff numbers are now approaching 50. There are plans to grow the business by another 20% in the coming year and create around five new jobs.

STS was established by Darlington brothers, Dave and Grahame Stone, in 1998 and they now have offices in Edinburgh city centre, near Stockport in Cheshire and in central London as well as their HQ on Kellaw Road in Darlington
