'Walking football' sessions doubled thanks to house builder

A walking football club for the over 50s is set to double its sessions thanks to donation from a local house builder.

Persimmon Homes North West has donated £500 to the Tameside Striders Denton Walking Football Group, which is run by volunteers, as part of the Community Champions scheme.

The builder, whose headquarters is in Urmston, selects two organisations each month to receive a match-funded donation of up to £1,000 through the popular scheme.

Currently, the Tameside Striders runs a two hour walking football session every Tuesday. Alan Richards from the group said: “We had a grant to get us going from Age UK, and now attract up to 30 men to our Tuesday session – the oldest is 81 and the youngest 54.

“Due to its popularity, we would really like to start another session on another day, and this very generous grant from Persimmon Homes will help towards sustainability, pitch hire, training kit and publicity material. Thank you so much.”

Dave Hodgson, Sales Director of Persimmon Homes North West, said: “This is exactly the kind of grassroots project that we like to support through Community Champions. It is important to us to work with local communities and try to boost projects that will really make a difference – such as this one.”

He added that they receive a large number of worthy applications each month, and urged charities who were not successful to re-apply.
