Plans receive approval for new Scarborough squash academy

Scarborough Borough Council has approved plans for the development of a brand new Squash and Racquets Academy in Scarborough.

Approval of the planning application, which was submitted by Scarborough RUFC, means that construction of the new academy will commence in the coming weeks.

The development will see a Squash and Racquets Academy be built within the rugby club’s Silver Royd premises on Scalby Road, which will feature four glass backed Courts and seating areas for spectators.

The development of the Academy is principally being funded by the McCabe Family Charitable Foundation.

Additionally support also is forthcoming from Scarborough Borough Council and a number of other local businesses.

Scott McCabe said: “the Academy will be a Centre of Excellence where youngsters will be encouraged to take up the sport at an early age, which I’m sure, like myself, will lead to a lifelong love of the game.

“Via coaching staff and visits to, and from local schools, we aim to raise the profile of squash and racquetball in our town, thus leading to participation in regional and national leagues and tournaments.”

Graeme Young, chief executive of Scarborough RUFC, commented: “We are delighted to have received the support of the Council and members of the business community for the construction of the new Academy, which indeed, will only further enhance the already wonderful facilities we have here at Silver Royd.”

Cllr Derek Bastiman, leader of Scarborough Borough Council, added: “Our partnership with Scarborough Rugby Club has always focussed on providing excellent sporting facilities for the local community.

“It is fantastic that the renewal of our agreement with the Club is helping to facilitate the development of the Academy and associated facilities for people of all ages and abilities who want to participate in squash and other racquet sports.”
