MSMR wins planning approval to transform St Albans
MSMR Architects’ proposal for the comprehensive redevelopment of an important city centre site in St Albans has been approved by the district’s Planning Referrals Committee.
The planned site includes Hertfordshire House car park, the NHS health centre, and the redundant police station.
The practice has worked closely with the St Albans City and District Council, as well as a number of local interest groups to ensure that the scheme would respond positively to the needs of the surrounding community.
Tony Williamson, director of Angle Property and developer behind the scheme, said: “We are very pleased with the scheme MSMR Architects has created and absolutely delighted by the planning outcome.
“Regenerating this site will deliver much-needed homes along with commercial activity fronting an exciting new public space. With the council’s backing we now look forward to moving forward with the project and rejuvenating this area of historic St Albans.”
The scheme will introduce new uses and activities, create new pedestrian routes and public spaces, and provide a vibrant mix of 20,000 sq ft of ground floor retail spaces; 30,000 sq ft of office accommodation and 86 residential apartments.
The design responds to the scale and architectural diversity of St Albans. Varied elevational treatment, together with carefully considered detailing and material selection gives the buildings a dynamic composition that responds positively to the context.
In addition, MSMR has achieved consent to convert a redundant 1960s office building for re-use NHS accommodation at lower ground and ground floor and 21 apartments above.
