Blanc de Bierges Steps up to Challenge of £28 Million Campus Project

Stonework specialists Blanc De Bierges stepped up to the mark when it came to providing products for a new health campus at Hull University.

Blanc de Bierges was responsible for installing grey silver granite steps at the entrance to the Allam Medical Building - part of the iconic five-storey £28 million health campus - built in-part with a £7-million donation from leading East Yorkshire businessman Assem Allam.

It took Blanc de Bierges three months to complete, following a lengthy tendering process. Blanc had originally spoken to the architect GWP Architects four years prior to securing the contract.

Chris McBride, Managing Director at Blanc de Bierges, said:  “We had a long period of waiting, from the start of 2016, but finally got the go ahead in March 2017. We had been keen to work on this particular project and were thrilled when we were given the go ahead.

“This was a new area for Blanc, we are renowned for supplying cast stonework to replicate natural limestone and Portland stone however we have recently added the silver grey granite products to our offering and we are delighted that they were specified for this project.

“It was a proud moment for us to see our hard work pay off and be part of such an iconic project.”

The health facility is home to Hull York Medical School (HYMS) and the University’s Faculty of Health and Social Care which between them deliver medical, nursing, midwifery and allied health professional training and carry out world-leading research in health and social care.

It includes a mock hospital ward, operating theatre, intensive care facilities and a large lecture theatre. It also includes a ground-floor atrium and research space.

Craig Milner, from the Moortown Group, which led the project, said: “We were impressed with their professionalism and commitment to ensure quality from the outset. Chris McBride initially produced a programme to show the time required regarding receipt of the order, production of its own construction drawings, approvals and manufacture periods and was authentic from the start. The durations advised were to the exact dates and enabled our work to continue knowing the steps would arrive just in time to allow us to meet the completion date.

“The step units arrived well packaged and without damage, the installation was made easy by each precast unit having a reference number that matched the numbers on the Blanc de Bierges drawings and the quality of the product provided was second-to-none. It was a pleasure doing business with Blanc de Bierges and I would recommend them for similar works on future projects”.
