Approval for three-block resi development in Manchester’s Greengate Regeneration Area

Plans for three new residential buildings at the end of Deansgate in Manchester have received the go-ahead from city planners.

Alderley Edge-headquartered property firm Select Property Group will deliver two 18-storey blocks and another of 16 storeys at Embankment West, the site of the former Manchester Exchange Railway Station.

Two of the buildings will comprise a mix of studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. The third will house 147 serviced apartments under the CitySuites brand.

The scheme will replace the car park located behind the company’s first CitySuites building on Chapel Street, which launched earlier this year.

In addition to the residential aspect, the development will open up the the area next to Embankment 101 with new green spaces and public walkways, running from Exchange Square and Chapel Street to Salford Approach.

CallisonRTKL is the architecture practice on the scheme.

Select Property Group’s strategic planning director, Michele Steel, said: “With Embankment 101 and CitySuites now open, the whole Embankment area is really starting to take shape so we’re delighted with the decision to enhance the area further and we’re looking forward to starting on site.”

CallisonRTKL director John Badman commented: “This development will be the final piece in the jigsaw of the comprehensive regeneration of the southern part of the Greengate Regeneration Area, and is set to become the ‘front door’ of the district.

“Set in three blocks, the scheme will overlook a curated public realm with active ground floors designed to enhance residents’ experience as well as that of the wider public.”

He added: “Its placemaking qualities will be reinforced with a robust architectural strategy that will ensure that the buildings will be both distinctive and distinguished and make a memorable and positive contribution to the image of wider regeneration area.”

Work will start in Summer 2018, following the demolition of the viaduct structure on site.
