Wine Merchants Firth & Co Celebrate a Trio of Prestigious New Clients

Expanding Yorkshire wine merchants Firth & Co are celebrating three prestigious new clients in the run-up to Christmas.

Firth & Co, who are based in bespoke offices, with a warehouse, at Lowfield Farm, Ainderby Steeple, near Northallerton, are now suppling three of the finest restaurants and conference venues in Yorkshire and the North East.

New trading partnerships have been finalised with The Black Swan Hotel at Helmsley; Bowcliffe Hall, near Wetherby; and Lartington Hall, near Barnard Castle.

Andrew Firth, the manging director of Firth & Co, commented: “These three deals round off an excellent year for Firth & Co and are a ringing endorsement of the high standards we consistently strive to achieve.

“Over the past few years, we have established a strong reputation for being a niche supplier of excellent European wines at competitive prices. We pride ourselves on a swift and personal service and are proud of the fact that we supply some of the very best hotels and restaurants in Yorkshire and the North East,” said Andrew.

He explained: “The Black Swan Hotel at Helmsley is now run by award-winning hotelier Jeremy Rata, previously, the managing director at The Devonshire Arms Country House Hotel at Bolton Abbey. Jeremy is looking to bring back the traditional values associated with The Black Swan.

Jeremy commented: “I have chosen Firth & Co to be The Black Swan’s wine partner because Andrew is the most loyal and supportive merchant I have ever dealt with. He is a formidable taster and a great networker. He works harder for his clients than any merchant I’ve encountered, is as honest as the day is long, and sources really excellent wines without fleecing you.

“In a sense I am a new client but in reality I’m a returning one, which is surely the best recommendation of all? I used him for the exclusivity on our wine list for the House wines at the Devonshire Arms in Bolton Abbey. All in all, he is a thoroughly decent and remarkable man.”

Meanwhile another very exciting supply agreement is with Jonathan Turner of Bowcliffe Hall. Bowcliffe is being turned into a prestigious events venue with one of the finest wine lists in the north of England. Jonathan Turner has also just purchased The Yorke Arms at Ramsgill.

He said: “I have known Andrew for many years and trust his experience and good judgment. His personal service is unrivalled, while his knowledge and choice of wines from across the world is exemplary. I think it is also important to choose local Yorkshire suppliers whenever possible, so Firth & Co fit the bill perfectly. I look forward to continuing our long and happy relationship in the coming years.”

The other very exciting development is with the exclusive and beautifully-restored Lartington 17th century Hall, near Barnard Castle, which is owned by John and Shona Harper Wilkes. They have recently appointed Richard Picard-Edwards, formerly of The Lords of the Manor Hotel in the Cotswolds, where he attained a Michelin Star.   Other Firth & Co customers include the Star Inn The City in York, owned and run by Michelin-starred chef and long-term customer Andrew Pern; the Pipe and Glass near Beverley, also Michelin-starred; the Blue Lion in East Witton; the Pheasant Inn, near Helmsley; The Bay Horse, Hurworth, near Darlington; Five House Farm Shop, Crathorne; The Three Acres, near Huddersfield; 1884 Dock Street Kitchen, Hull; and the White Horse and Griffin in Whitby.

“We also run a very successful bespoke private customer service, providing wines for clients across Yorkshire and the North East. Our new premises will enable us to provide an ever better service, with a wider selection of quality wines, predominantly from Europe, but also from the new world, too,” he added.
