Couple Leaves Behind Bergen for Biking near the Basin

Residents at Nottingham’s latest community are joining together to fully embrace Trent Basin’s green energy ethos swapping cars for bike, installing solar panels and enjoying low-cost energy living.

Developed by award-winning regeneration specialist Blueprint, Trent Basin is a multi-phased neighbourhood located on the banks of the River Trent in Nottingham with a focus on sustainable energy principles, earning a stand-out reputation for its green ethos and innovative community-energy programme.

As a result, the scheme, which is within Nottingham City Council’s £250m waterside regeneration area, is attracting a number of homebuyers who want to invest in its green energy values.

Retired engineer Per (66) and retired teacher Ruth Lindstrom (68) moved into an apartment at Trent Basin from their hometown in Bergen, Norway in July. Having retired in December 2016, the couple had always been green conscious and wanted to move back to the city as it provided more affordable options compared to homes in Norway. Trent Basin provided the perfect location.

Now the couple are enjoying incorporating Trent Basin’s sustainable living into their everyday life and new home. This included travelling more than 1,000 miles to Norway in order to sell their left-hand drive car, in favour of purchasing two new brand-new bikes which would help them save money and take advantage of the excellent alternative travelling options on offer.

Ruth said: “Trent Basin’s excellent regeneration ethos has always appealed to us and we were lucky to be visiting in January when Trent Basin had a Show Apartment Opening event. Once we saw the apartment with its riverfront views and heard about the low-cost energy bills, we were practically sold!

“The city-centre is only 15 minutes away from Trent Basin by bike and with beautiful cycle paths along the River Trent, we found that there was honestly no need for a car so we sold ours and began cycling and getting healthy instead! We now use our bikes every day and nearby electric buses and transport into the city makes it even easier to get around!”

Ruth and Per are not the only residents at Trent Basin embracing the green lifestyle on offer. A number of residents have sold their cars in favour of bikes and many are taking advantage of electric car points by purchasing new electric cars. Residents will be able to opt into a community energy scheme which will see the largest community energy battery in Europe installed at Trent Basin.
