The backbone of digitization: e-shelter opens another data center in Frankfurt at Europe’s largest data center campus

e-shelter, a leading data center provider in Europe and an NTT Communications company, has opened the eighth building “H” on its Frankfurt 1 Data Center campus, adding 7,100 square meters of new data center technical space to Europe’s largest data center campus, with an investment of EUR 100 million. e-shelter currently operates across ten locations in the DACH region and a data center area of around 90,000 square meters. With this expansion of the Frankfurt 1 Data Center campus, e-shelter has further underlined its position as a leading provider of colocation services as well as the central cloud marketplace in Europe.

Peter Feldmann, Mayor of the City Frankfurt am Main, spoke at the opening ceremony. Other speakers included Rupprecht Rittweger, CEO of e-shelter, State Secretary Mr. Mathias Samson, Hessian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Energy, Transport and Regional Development, and Dr. Thomas Olemotz, CEO of Bechtle AG.

“Frankfurt is home to the world’s largest internet hub (as measured by data throughput), making the city the center of the infrastructure for new digital streams,” explained Peter Feldmann, Mayor of the City in Frankfurt am Main. “e-shelter is a key company, as its data centers form the backbone of Germany’s digitization. e-shelter started here as a start-up 17 years ago, and is now a leader in Europe, not least because of its presence in the metropolitan region of Frankfurt. “

“This is where the future of the German economy is happening,” said Rupprecht Rittweger, CEO and founder of e-shelter. “In 2017, e-shelter has invested a total of EUR 250 million and we plan to build, operate and secure further data centers all over Europe – but we always keep an eye on the big picture. No wonder leading companies and cloud providers place their trust in us!”   With a highly secure and energy efficient design, building H of the Frankfurt 1 Data Center is 18,000 square meters in total and was completed after just nine months of construction.

The essential specifications of the new data center include:  17 MW power capacity;  separate emergency power supply and  access to more than 350 carriers as well as direct access to global cloud and application providers.

Europe’s largest data center site offers its own innovation lab The entire Frankfurt 1 Data Center is the largest data center site in Europe, bringing together 60,000 square meters of data center space and 120 MW of power. Part of the Frankfurt campus and one of its highlights is the e-shelter innovation lab. Here, customers have the opportunity to conduct proofs-of-concept and to validate user scenarios. From cabling and filling server racks to implementation of a software architecture for the cloud, concrete application cases can be implemented. More than 50 software and hardware providers have already invested approximately five million Euro in the e-shelter innovation lab since the test laboratory opened in spring of this year. A major advantage of the Innovation Lab for e-shelter customers is that evaluation of certain cloud configurations or digitization concepts can be carried out.
