Hull security startup locks in future growth with five-figure NatWest fund

SASHTOP, the Hull-based security startup, has secured a five-figure funding boost from NatWest to help launch a brand new product.

The device, which locks doors and windows, preventing forced-entry while still allowing access in the event of an emergency, has been developed by business duo Alex Appelbe and Paul Batty.

The product was brought to market after Paul’s mother suffered from a fall in her home while it was locked. With 20 years’ experience as a locksmith, Paul was able to gain entry, but knew many people in the same situation wouldn’t be able to help.

With this funding from NatWest, SASHSTOP was created and launched in time for MLA Expo, Europe’s largest locksmith and security exhibition trade show. As a result, it was given the ‘Best Product’ award.

The finance package agreed by the bank will allow the startup to expand, with two or three new jobs being created within the next 12 months.

Alex Appelbe, director of SASHSTOP, said: “The support from NatWest significantly accelerated the rate at which our product progressed from prototype to market.

“Sash Jammer is unique, securing a property from potential break-ins, while offering a quick, non-locking facility in the event of a fire and access in an emergency. It goes a long way in protecting the vulnerable, elderly and children.

“The positive feedback we’ve received for our product is encouraging. NatWest has given us a great deal of guidance, sharing our vision along the way. We can’t thank the bank enough for supporting our business venture.”

Simon Winterburn, relationship manager at NatWest, added: “SASHSTOP is a fantastic example of an ambitious start-up, born out of true entrepreneurialism.

“Its products and their components are all manufactured here in the UK and NatWest is proud to support a company having such a positive impact on the safety of its customers.”
