Andy Burnham Officially Opens Latest Investment at Abbey College Manchester

Abbey College Manchester has marked a significant £250,000 investment in the college with the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham officially opening its new facilities.

The leading independent college is continuing to grow its strong presence in the city of Manchester, with a major expansion to its amenities on both the ground floor and the basement.

The growth of the ground floor has allowed several extra classrooms to be accommodated on upper floors, with the new area now containing administrational and operational offices including the Principal’s office and student services. The extra classrooms include a science laboratory and will allow for additional student capacity. The basement has been renovated to provide a further learning and study space comprising of computer facilities and a ‘chill-out area’.

The exciting new phase of the college’s development cements its investment and position within the vibrant and dynamic local community, whilst also demonstrating its commitment to being a significant employer in the city.

Students of different nationalities warmly welcomed Mr Burnham to the college, greeting him in a variety of languages. The Mayor then embarked on a tour of the facilities where he unveiled a plaque marking the official opening and cut a celebratory cake. Two students at the college Lara O’Donoghue (18) and Jehaad Khalid (18) presented Andy Burnham with a special engraved gift.

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham commented: “I remember attending the college five years ago and I felt then that it was a warm and welcoming place. I previously attended as an MP and it is nice to be invited back as the Mayor of Greater Manchester and see the progress of the facilities.”

Principal Liz Elam commented: “The staff and students were delighted to welcome Mr Burnham back to the college again to officially declare the new facilities open. He first visited several years ago to conduct a question and answer session with the students, which was a wonderful experience for them.

“Many students from the college aspire to study in Manchester after finishing their A-Levels or International Foundation Programmes, which is important for the local economy. We have also launched a new programme for our home students, which is an alternative to A-levels. At the college, we have a strong belief in ensuring students study the right programme to build their skills and confidence, and consider appropriate facilities to do this as being paramount.”

Student Lara O’Donoghue commented: “I was delighted to be asked to present Mr Burnham with his gift. It was an honour to meet him and to also have the opportunity to have a one to one conversation with him.”

Abbey College is a leading independent college in the heart of Manchester, with a fast-growing and vibrant community.
