Macclesfield College students take the WorldSkills competition by storm

Creative media students of Macclesfield College – Specialist College for further education – have recently competed in the renowned WorldSkills competition finals in Birmingham.

Students Estelle Hulse (18), Jake Lownds (18), Callum Swinton (18) and Ella Mayo (17) were put through their paces during the four stage process submitting a media portfolio, producing and creating a music video to reach the semi-finals and delivering a five minute pitch to a panel of industry specialists from a blind brief with two hours to prepare.

The three day final in Birmingham attracted 80,000 spectators and team Macclesfield produced a polished four minute video promoting WolrdSkills, being judged on all stages of production.

The students achieved a very impressive silver on their first appearance, competing against some very experienced competitors that have been to the finals many times before.

WorldSkills aim to provide young people with the opportunity to have the best start in their working careers and life. Following from this success, some of the students are now considering transferring their skills straight into the work place rather than university - realising the potential of their skills at an earlier age through the competition.

Annie Ashton, Curriculum Leader at Macclesfield College, comments: “This is a fantastic achievement by some of our most talented students. To win silver against strong competition who have previously attended WorldSkills is a very tough challenge.

“The way our students have been able to work collaboratively through all stages of the competition really showcases the talent that Macclesfield has. Our mission is to continue to support students and help them achieve their goals. We are very proud of them.”

Macclesfield College is excited to compete in next year’s WorldSkills and we look forward to hopefully bringing home a gold!
