Manchester Council to approve plans for 135 new homes north of city

Two projects to deliver dozens of new homes in Manchester look set for approval.

Manchester City Council’s executive is expected to give the greenlight for plans to build 135 affordable properties in the north of the city when it meets this Wednesday (January 10).

The authority secured £2.85m from the Homes and Communities Agency’s (HCA) Shared Ownership and Affordable Housing Programme and borrowed £8.433m for the creation of 25 shared ownership and 50 affordable rental homes. Northwards Housing will manage the properties.

A further 20 homes being built on the Booth Hall scheme by developer Taylor Wimpey will be acquired by the council and offered for shared ownership. A £345k HCA grant and a £2.108m investment from the council will fund the transaction.

Elsewhere, the projects will bring 40 homes to six sites in Cheetham, Harpurhey and Moston. This part is funded with a recently approved grant of £1.4m, secured through the continuous market engagement (CME) of the HCA’s Affordable Homes Programme.

The deputy leader of Manchester City Council, Cllr Bernard Priest, said: “These properties fill a definite requirement for high quality, affordable homes in the city.

“We know demand is far outstripping supply, so it is important that we can use as many funding opportunities as possible to help deliver the homes people need at a price they can afford.”

He continued: “I’m particularly pleased that through these schemes we will be able to provide genuine routes on to the housing ladder, which is sadly missing for many people living in the city.

“We will be getting on site quickly for each of these schemes to get the homes to market and start providing much needed homes to Manchester people as quickly as possible.”
