New premises and recruitment boost for North Yorkshire architects

Summerhouse Architects, which is based at Guisborough in North Yorkshire, has relocated to new, purpose-built offices and recruited new associate Christian Cooling to join its growing team.

The new offices, designed by Summerhouse founders David and Suzie Mack, are a showcase of the firm’s skills with an environmentally sustainable design that incorporates salvaged and re-cycled materials, under-floor heating, and maximises natural light in a converted barn setting.

Christian Cooling, a senior architectural technologist with 25 years’ construction industry experience, joins Summerhouse from Darlington-based Nivens Architects and has previously worked with David at DKS Architects in Stokesley.

Summerhouse architect and co-founder, David Mack, said: “We are keen to build on the success of our activity in 2017, which saw the completion of a number of well received schemes, including projects for Barker & Stonehouse’s growing retail estate and the completion of a beautiful listed-barn conversion in Carlton-in-Cleveland.”

“Chris’s appointment will give us valuable extra skills and capacity that will enable us to enhance our service to clients in the coming year.”

He added: “We have a growing number of interesting residential, commercial and retail projects in the pipeline for 2018 including a new ‘Alms House’ style development at Wynyard Park and the first phase of a custom-build housing development near Maltby. For this we worked with Mode Homes to produce a series of design options which will give future buyers a real opportunity to influence the design and layout of their own homes.”

Christian Cooling said: “Summerhouse Architects is an ideal fit for me as the firm is as passionate about creative and sustainable architecture as I am. I’m joining the team at an exciting time, with some really varied and interesting projects about to get underway.”
