Pamper Days and Trips Down Memory Lane Mark Dignity Day at Care Homes

A group of care homes took part in a scheme aimed at recognising and celebrating the importance of dignity within the industry.

Milford Care, which has care homes in Belper, Ashbourne, Hucknall and Alfreton, took part in Dignity Action Day.

Milford House held a pamper morning ahead of an afternoon tea.

Kathryn White, activities co-ordinator at Milford House, said: “We had a visit from a barber to give our gentleman a traditional wet shave and Muhammad Ali from Phil’s barber shop in Duffield pampered our gentleman in our new hair salon.

“Also our ladies had a lovely pamper morning having their hair and nails done ready for our tea party in the afternoon. We all had a lovely day.”

Ashbourne Lodge took a trip down memory lane with a 1940s themed afternoon tea with pictures, signs, ration books and a quiz.

Stacy Sandham, activities coordinator at Ashbourne Lodge, said: “We watched footage on a DVD of the 1940s, which showed different events in sport, wars and countries. We had afternoon tea in fine china cups with saucers, with cake we had made from a recipe from the 1940s, called ‘Bare Cupboard Cake’. Residents openly reminisced about their childhood and life in this era.”

The campaign’s core values are about changing the culture of care services and placing a greater emphasis on improving the quality of care and the experience of people using services.

Throughout the week staff focused on dignity as a whole, encouraging discussion around what it means to residents and promoting the ten point ‘Dignity Do’s’ set out by the campaign.

Hazelgrove Care Home in Hucknall held a craft session to make more apples to go on their dignity tree, as well as giving arm and shoulder massages and holding a sing-along with the staff.

Spencer Grove added to a dignity tree at the home with cut-out hands of their residents and relatives and opened its doors to local pre-schoolers and their mothers.
