City's first ever Chilli Carnival turns up the heat this May

Liverpool will be feeling hot, hot, hot this May as it welcomes its first ever ‘Chilli Carnival’.

The two-day spice extravaganza will showcase a range of chilli-fuelled concoctions from cooking shows to cocktails and even a chilli eating competition on Saturday, May 12 and Sunday, May 13.

Hosted by Bond Events Group, whose team have worked on a number of North West festivities including Chinese New Year, Liverpool Arab Arts Festival and Laces Out to name a few, the festival will come to the Bombed Out Church (St Luke’s Church) as part of a five-figure sum investment.

Director of Bond Events Group Jay Ogugua said: “Our inspiration for Chilli Carnival came from the desire to add something truly unique to Liverpool’s extensive events calendar paired with our team’s die-hard appreciation for all things spicy. Here at Bond Events Group, we are all about utilising our individual passions to create events that the whole family can enjoy.

“With the festival set to take place in May, we’re excited to announce that we are now officially sponsored by Encona Sauces, which is the UK’s best-selling hot and spicy sauce retailer. Our supplier list is also quickly filling up with names including Yukti, an Indian street food restaurant, and local Caribbean eatery Eat Up Gud, which is currently hosting a residency within the Baltic Market. The festival will also host our ‘Arri-bar’, serving up a selection of chilli-infused drinks including the oriental spiced Opihr Gin.”

Throughout the weekend, the Bombed Out Church will be transformed into a haven for spice-lovers with a variety of artisan market stalls and chilli-inspired street food traders alongside entertainment including jazz bands, drummers, dancers and even fire performers.

Senior Project and Events Manager of Bond Events Group Laura Cotter added: “As the team’s resident chilli enthusiast, I’m certainly excited to be showcasing our Chilli Carnival and offering the people of Liverpool the chance to sample dishes from the mild to the top of the Scoville Scale and everything in between. We’re particularly excited for our daily chilli eating competitions, hosted by ChilliBob’s Farm, whereby participants will test their endurance with a variety of spice levels. The winner will be rewarded with £80 cash and an Encona Chilli Hamper, with the runner up also receiving a special prize.

“As part of our partnership with St Luke’s Church, we will also be going on to host our monthly market, ‘The Bombed Out Market’, within the church starting from Sunday, March 25. We can’t wait to introduce the people of Liverpool to all things Bond Events Group has to offer.”
