Builders chosen for phase one of Liverpool’s new £50m Cruise Terminal

Authorities in Liverpool have chosen a building and civil engineering contractor to prepare the city’s new £50m Cruise Terminal.

The council confirmed that McLaughlin & Harvey will deliver the first part of a two-stage design and build contract.

The construction company will work with Liverpool City Council’s design team, headed up by Ramboll UK, to finalise the design and construction method.

The project will include completing enabling works such as the dismantling of the existing derelict Princess Jetty, which was gifted to the city by Peel Land and Property.

Once complete, the Cruise Terminal will enable Liverpool to welcome the world’s biggest cruise ships to its UNESCO World Heritage-listed waterfront.

New data from Cruise Liverpool shows that over 57 vessels will bring 100,000 passengers and crew to the city this year alone.

An outline planning application for the facility is due to be heard by the council’s planning committee in April, with site preparation at Princes Dock in Liverpool Waters likely to begin in October.

Joe Anderson, Mayor of Liverpool, said: “I’m delighted that we’ve appointed such a renowned company as McLaughlin & Harvey to undertake this phase of design work of our new cruise facility.

“This is a major step forward for what is one of the city’s most important regeneration projects of this decade and is vital to growing Liverpool’s tourism economy.”

He continued: “We want to provide the next generation of super liners and their passengers a world class welcome with a five-star experience.

“A new cruise facility will also be a huge boost to our plans to regenerate the North Liverpool docklands and create thousands of new jobs which is why we’re putting together the best team of experts to ensure we build this facility to the very highest standards.”

John Mariner, contract director at McLaughlin & Harvey, commented: “We are delighted to have been appointed to deliver this prestigious and iconic project on the Liverpool waterfront and look forward to working collaboratively with Liverpool City Council’s team.”
