ENGIE to deliver over £60m worth of improvements for Northumberland homes

Thousands of homes across Northumberland will benefit from major internal and external upgrades, as part of a five year investment of over £60m from Bernicia, to enhance living conditions for social housing tenants.

ENGIE’s regeneration business has been appointed to deliver a comprehensive £20m programme of improvement works as part of this overall investment by Bernicia, which will commence in April and be delivered over the next five years.

The energy and services specialist will deliver internal modernisations, such as replacement kitchens, heating, rewiring and replacement windows and doors; while externally the company will undertake re-roofing work, chimney repairs and replacement walls.

As part of the project, ENGIE has also confirmed there will be significant local investment and opportunities for local people, including employment and training prospects.

The company will be utilising a local work force and also engaging with neighbouring schools and colleges to encourage more young people into construction.

ENGIE has also expressed interest in working with cross-sector organisations that have strong ties to the local community and can help to engage hard to reach groups.

Andrew McIntosh, regional managing director for ENGIE, said: “This is a carefully considered project that encompasses much more than just home improvements.

“On every project we deliver, we are heavily focussed on people and it’s fantastic to be working with Bernicia - who are wholly committed to their tenants and are investing heavily to enrich the lives of local residents.

“We have an extensive background in similar wide-scale regeneration projects with residents in situ and have a committed team that will communicate openly throughout the duration of works.”

Bernicia owns and manages more than 14,000 properties in the North East, providing housing, care and support services.

Neil Storey, assistant director of technical services, added: “The projects are part of Bernicia’s ongoing commitment to investing in our existing homes, neighbourhoods and communities.

“We look forward to forging a strong partnership with ENGIE and other delivery contractors over the next five years.”
