Newcastle housing development attracts residents all the way from Devon!

A new affordable housing scheme, developed by Home Group on behalf of Newcastle City Council, has transformed a run-down area into a modern neighbourhood, prompting one family to move back to Newcastle all the way from Devon.

The new homes at Northbourne Street in Newcastle replace run down Victorian terraces. Constructed by Tynexe and designed by architects Barnet North and Queensbury, the eco-friendly homes on this £9m development utilise the traditional layout of the terraced street but with contemporary styling.

The new two and three bedroom houses and two bedroom apartments are built using renewable resources and with minimal waste, and are set back from the street with low front walls, side access gates, and improved visibility to enhance safety and offer a more modern feel.

The 86 family homes have now been let to local residents, most of who already lived in Newcastle, with one family returning to their favourite city having previously relocated to Devon.

Toju Ekpe, who has moved back to Newcastle with her three children after spending many years in Devon, said: “I lived in Newcastle for two years some time ago and I absolutely love the place! I made so many friends here and it’s such a great city with such great, friendly people.

“I remember the neighbours being really helpful with the children when they were really young. Nothing was too much trouble. It’s easy to make friends here and there’s a diverse, welcoming community.

“My children are excited too they’ve been saying ‘oh, mummy, are we going to see the snow!’ So they may be a little disappointed in that respect given we’re now in spring. But I just know they will make so many friends and have a happy life here, as will I.”

Brian Ham, executive director – development, Home Group said: “It’s lovely to see Toju and her family so happy with their new home and excited about their future here in Newcastle. Our work at Northbourne Street has focussed on revitalising a neighbourhood that was previously quite run down. By working closely with our partners, we have transformed Northbourne Street into a modern, eco-friendly area that follows ‘secured by design’ standards – an initiative that uses design principles to promote safety and security.

“As a North East resident myself, I can see why Toju loves the people and culture of Newcastle so much. It really is a great place to live!”

Cllr Ged Bell, Cabinet Member for Inclusive Growth at Newcastle City Council said “We have ambitious plans to deliver a range of high quality housing and this development is a fantastic example of our commitment to meeting the diverse needs of all our residents.

“With Newcastle recently named as the best place in the world to visit it was great to talk to Toju and her family and hear why they were so keen to move back to our City. I’m sure they, and all the residents here, will enjoy life in their new homes in our great and friendly city.”
