Junior football team scores grand donation to cook up a new club kitchen

Players and supporters of a junior football team put their bid in the pot to win a £1,000 cash award to help kit out a kitchen in their new clubhouse. Ellington Juniors Football Club, near Morpeth, applied to Persimmon Homes Community Champions fund for the money and were selected as the North East regional winners for March. Sarah Gair, who made the bid on behalf of the junior football club, said: “We are fortunate to have been gifted a nine-acre site to build football pitches, a clubhouse, and have just reached our fundraising target for that – with work likely to start in June. “Now we just need to raise the funds to fit out the clubhouse kitchen with fridge, freezer, cooker and utensils. This donation will be added to the mix to help us achieve that goal. “We are committed to providing the club and all the facilities for the 130 young players who currently train and play for us and to improving their health and fitness opportunities.” Debbie Zaben, sales and marketing director for Persimmon Homes North East, based in Newcastle, said: “The clubs has already achieved a major goal by securing the funds needed to start work on building the new facilities. They and their supporters clearly put a lot of effort in off the pitch to reach this stage and we are pleased we can help with some of the kitchen kit. “This is exactly what our Community Champions scheme is all about, supporting good causes to make a positive change in the areas we work and live. We are pleased that we have been able to offer our support and of course we wish them well in June.”

The Persimmon Community Champions initiative is a national programme where charities and groups can apply for funding up to the value of £1,000 to match money they have already raised themselves. Each or Persimmon Homes’ 30 regions has two awards of up to £1,000 to handout each month. Debbie added: “We’ve made it really simple to apply for funding, and we’re urging groups and charities to apply for next month’s donations by completing an online form on our website, at www.persimmonhomes.com/charity
