Walter Thompson scoops quartet of industry awards
A LEADING regional construction company has won four prestigious industry awards.
Northallerton-based builder Walter Thompson won two gold and two bronze awards in the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) National Site Awards.
The scheme was introduced in 1999 to recognise and reward the UK’s most considerate sites for the contribution they have made toward improving the image of construction. The CCS scheme looks at measures companies have put in place to be more considerate to neighbourhoods, their workforce and the environment.
This year’s awards scheme ceremony was held at the Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh, where the UK’s leading construction companies were vying for the coveted CCS titles.
Family-owned Walter Thompson scooped gold awards for their work at Central Lodge in Middlesbrough and Le Cateau School in Catterick Garrison, while the bronze awards were won for work on Peterlee Care Home and Middleton Hall Retirement Village near Darlington.
Walter Thompson’s Senior Site Manager Phillip Gallagher was responsible for two of the sites, Le Cateau School and Peterlee Care Home, while Senior Site Manager Mike Hamm was responsible for the Central Lodge transformation and Site Manager Andrew Smith supervised the work at Middleton Hall.
Walter Thompson has been a member of the scheme for 13 years, winning at least one award in each of those years. The company became an Associate Member in 2008 and is now a scheme Partner.
Two years ago, the company, established in Northallerton in 1920, won the UK’s Most Considerate Site Award in the £500,000 to £5m category for an extension and refurbishment work at a Middlesbrough school. Mike Hamm was the site manager at the school.
Paul Hammerton, Managing Director at Walter Thompson, said the company was thrilled to have won so many awards: “We consistently do well at these important awards because we always put consideration to neighbours of our sites at the top of our priorities. We work hard to keep any disruption to a minimum and always go above and beyond compliance with the CCS scheme.
“The Awards are one of the most revered accolades within the UK construction industry, recognising sites that have demonstrated the very highest level of consideration in respect of the community, environment and our own team– and we’re delighted to have come away with so many awards, it’s our most successful year so far.
“I’m proud of what we’ve achieved and the awards are just recognition for Mike, Phillip and Andrew who work so hard to build relationships with clients and communities while keeping our workforce safe.”
