Work commences on £19m ‘Steel City’ student complex in Sheffield city centre

Work has now commenced on a new £19m student accommodation scheme in Sheffield city centre.

The multi-million pound Steel City scheme, for client Future Generation, will deliver 324 rooms in the city’s St Vincent’s Quarter.

Part of the scheme includes the refurbishment of Grade-II Listed ‘little mesters’ former metals trades workshops, which dates back to 1833.

The accommodation will feature a selection of en-suite rooms, studios and one and two bedroom duplex apartments.

Other facilities will include reception, laundry, security office, cinema room and rooftop terrace with café bar.

Clegg Construction is delivering the scheme, which was designed by Sheffield-based Axis Architecture.

The development is situated on Hollis Croft close to the University of Sheffield’s School of Engineering.

Simon Blackburn, Clegg Construction managing director, said: “This is one of the biggest projects we have worked on in recent years and it is testament to the reputation we have built in delivering high quality student accommodation developments across the UK.”

The scheme is due to be completed in time for the start of the 2019/2020 academic year.
