First Bradford Manufacturing Week information event announced

Local manufacturers are being urged to sign up to the first information event to showcase the benefits and logistics behind the district’s first Bradford Manufacturing Week in October.

Held at the Bradford Industrial Museum from 9am on Wednesday 16 May, the two-hour event will involve a series of short presentations from Bradford Chamber, career specialists Aspire igen, local schools and their pupils alongside current manufacturers who are involved with the Week.

Organised by Nick Garthwaite, Bradford Chamber president and MD of international chemicals and detergents manufacturer, Christeyns, the morning will reinforce the benefits of taking part in the district’s first spotlight on manufacturing to schools and local businesses.

Nick said: “Bradford Manufacturing Week (8-12 October) aims to educate young people about career opportunities in the manufacturing sector but will only be a success if local manufacturers get involved. Our information event is being organised to give more details on what will be happening in October and importantly, what support is available to ensure manufacturers can open their doors easily and without the barriers caused by red tape.”

He added: “Our steering group includes Bradford Council, career specialists, local schools, legal and financial experts and Bradford Chamber who are all committed to facilitating the process of getting young people into local manufacturing businesses to see and experience the opportunities for themselves. We have the experts available to help make finding and partnering with schools as straightforward as possible.”

The Bradford Manufacturing Week information event starts at 9am and includes details about how manufacturers can find and work with schools, the ‘toolbox’ for working with young people, details of ‘what the week looks like’ and guidelines on how to create positive work experience placements.

Bradford Manufacturing Week (8-12 October), is led by West & North Yorkshire Chamber and backed by the newly-formed Bradford Economic Partnership. It aims to introduce the district’s manufacturers to young people and boost apprenticeship numbers by creating more inspired, informed and ‘work ready’ applicants into the sector.

Through visits, talks, tours and information events, the week aims to engage with around 75 local schools, reach more than 20,000 teenagers and create 1,000 work experience days across the district.

Nick added: “To make Bradford Manufacturing Week a success we need to get local manufacturers to sign up and open their doors - they will only do that if they feel informed and supported. This event will do exactly that so, to all manufacturers, get in touch, book online and let’s keep the momentum and support going for strengthening the awareness, profile and passion for manufacturing to our next generation!”

Bradford Manufacturing Week is being delivered with Bradford-based school and career specialists Aspire igen with additional sponsorship from Gordons, Naylor Wintersgill, the Bradford Economic Partnership, Mitton Mechanical and the University of Bradford, alongside a steering group including Bradford Grammar School, Bradford Council and local businesses.
