Plans unveiled for new homes development at Leeds gateway site

Plans have been submitted to transform a brownfield site located on a main route into Leeds city centre into a new homes development of 143 apartments.

The two-acre site is located where Burley Road meets Willow Road, just one-mile west of the city centre and is also flanked by Kirkstall Road and Kirkstall Viaduct.

The scheme would be developed by Leeds construction company The Broadley Group, which also owns the site. It has been designed by Brewster Bye Architects.

Previously home to Burley Liberal Club and a former bank building, the site was more recently occupied by Broadley’s decorating division. Both buildings have now been demolished after sitting empty in recent years.

The proposed development will offer a range of one, two and three-bedroom apartments, spread across two, five storey buildings that will be stepped in height in line with the natural contours of the site.

There will also be a parking area, secure cycle storage and a range of landscaped areas, including several central courtyards offering communal gardens and a large expanse of public South facing green space complete with seating areas and footpaths leading through the viaduct into Burley Park.

Paul Manku, development director from Broadley, said: “This site is in a vibrant part of Leeds, just minutes away from the city centre and a two minute walk from Cardigan Fields with its cinema, bowling, gym, restaurants and entertainment.

“There are also lots of popular independent restaurants and shops nearby, as well as an established residential community that includes students, professionals and families.

“There’s no doubt this development would complement all this and make a valuable contribution to the local area, as well as creating a popular place to live whilst giving an empty site a new lease of life for generations to come.”
