Five Wynne Construction schemes recognised at prestigious awards

Staff at Wynne Construction are celebrating after scooping five accolades at the 2018 North Wales Local Authority Building Control awards.

And two of the firm’s winning entries have been selected to go through to the All-Wales final. They are the RNLI Lifeboat station in Llandudno, and Ysgol Cybi in Holyhead.

Managing director Chris Wynne praised the dedication and professionalism of team members that ensured judges singled out so many of the company’s projects.

He said: “We strive to excel in every aspect of our work. Technically, we’re ahead of the game by being one of the few firms to be BIM Level 2 accredited, which saves money for clients during the build, and on-going maintenance for the lifetime of a building.

“But it’s also rewarding to have our efforts in all other aspects, from health & safety, to communications with council officers, recognised. Once again, the Wynne team has done us proud.”

Dave Sharp, building control lead at Wrexham County Borough Council & senior vice-president of LABC, who co-ordinates the awards said:

“These awards are very important for the North Wales construction industry as a whole.

“LABC works with developers to drive up building standards and protect the investments made in North Wales by residents and commercial partners alike.

“Once again, we attracted a high number of excellent quality entries. I congratulate all the county and North Wales regional winners.”

The schemes selected for the national final are:

RNLI Llandudno won best small commercial project in Conwy county; and was also the overall 2018 North Wales winner.

Wynne Construction built a new station for inshore and all-weather class lifeboats, including a new rock revetment and launch ramp.

Judges said: “The location was a difficult build for the contractor due to an extremely challenging and exposed environment next to the sea.

“The contractor worked well with the local authority building control team and good lines of communication were set up for regular site inspections.

“The contractor has been a regular to our awards in the past and continues to produce a high standard of build.”

Ysgol Cybi won the best educational building in Anglesey, plus best the 2018 overall winner for North Wales

Wynne Construction refurbished an Edwardian listed building, and built a contrasting two-storey extension, connected by a glazed corridor, for 525 pupils.

Judges said: “The general standard of work and careful attention to detail was of the highest order. This, coupled with the close alliance, good communication and a team approach to innovative problem solving, helped deliver an excellent building and facility.

“This challenging project follows CADW’s strict requirements throughout and hence is credit to Wynne Construction once again.”

Other schemes shortlisted were:

Engineering block for Coleg Cambria, Bersham – best educational building in Wrexham; Ysgol Maesgeirchen, Bangor – best educational building in Gwynedd; Northop Management Centre – best educational building in Flintshire.
