Greenlight for revised transformation of Chester’s historic shot tower factory

Developer Whitecroft Group has secured the greenlight for plans to breath new life into Chester’s former shot tower factory.

The developer, which originally received approval for the project in 2016, has reworked its vision of turning the 18th-century manufacturing complex into apartments.

The new scheme, a mix of industrial and contemporary architecture, will house 54 one- and two-bedroom apartments along with 15 two- and three-bedroom duplex apartments and three four-bed townhouses.

The Grade II-listed tower will undergo repairs to futureproof its structure, while more than £15k will be spent on a new home for protected peregrine falcons.

Whitecroft Group MD David Giovanni said: “After listening to feedback from local stakeholders, we’re incredibly happy with the new plans.

“We really wanted to be sympathetic to the heritage of the site whilst ensuring that it met the needs of modern homeowners, with open-plan living and contemporary features. The scale of this project is extraordinary and there is nothing else in Chester of this prominence or quality.”

He continued: “We really want to set a clear benchmark in design for upcoming developments in the city. Everything from the build quality and aesthetics, to internal layout and functionality, has been carefully planned to ensure these homes are phenomenal.

“This is a landmark site for Chester and a stand-out development for us. We’re excited to see the project to completion.”

Demolition and enabling works have already been undertaken. Construction is due to start in the coming weeks.
