Scotland’s youth shine brightly at Year of Young People fundraiser
Scotland’s leading independent fostering agency, Foster Care Associates Scotland (FCAS), hosted a fun-and sun-filled day of fundraising to celebrate the country’s Year of Young People 2018 initiative and to mark the end of Foster Care Fortnight. On Sunday 27th May, over 100 FCAS carers, staff, young people and even their dogs joined a 5km charity run at Strathclyde Country Park before enjoying a vast array of arts, crafts, outdoor games and a picnic in the park.
Named ‘Go Achieve’ by FCAS carers, the event celebrated the agency’s young people, with their achievements over the past 12 months and their hopes and dreams for the future all placed onto a specially designed achievement tree.
The ‘colourfest’ theme saw participants sprayed with colour powder every 1km culminating with a mass colour throw at the end of the run.
A total of £520 was raised for two charities chosen by FCAS carers for their impact on and invaluable work with young people throughout Scotland – Children’s Hospices across Scotland (CHAS) and Play and Learning Support (PALS).
Aiming to inspire Scotland through its youth, Year of Young People 2018 is a campaign led by the Scottish Government to celebrate the younger generations’ achievements, value their contribution to communities and create new opportunities for them to shine on a local, national and international scale.
Jo Derrick, Managing Director at Foster Care Associates Scotland, commented: “As a child-centred agency, committed to making a positive and lasting difference to the lives of children and young people, we have welcomed the opportunity to celebrate the Year of young People 2018.
“Every day we are amazed by the resilience, strength and unrelenting positivity the young people we work with show and what better way to support their vital role in our communities than by coming together and raising funds for two equally inspiring children’s charities.
“Not only did we raise a fantastic amount of money, our young people, carers and staff all enjoyed a wonderful day together, sharing precious moments that will create fond memories in the years to come.”
Based in Edinburgh, Children’s Hospices across Scotland (CHAS) has been offering a full family support service for children and young people with life-shortening conditions for over 20 years. This includes palliative care, family respite and support through its hospices, homecare services and hospital presence.
Promoting and improving access for play, learning and social interaction for children and young people with additional support needs, PALS provides facilities and activities for recreational, educational and leisure time across North Lanarkshire.
Year of Young People 2018 is an opportunity for generations to come together and celebrate the nation’s young people. It is a platform for young people (aged 8 – 26) that will give them a stronger voice on issues which affect their lives, showcase their ideas and talents, and create a more positive perception of them in society.
