Lidl to open brand new supermarket in York following £5m investment
A partially vacant former packaging warehouse on James Street in York is to be demolished and transformed into a brand new Lidl supermarket, following a £5m investment.
The building, which was once occupied by packaging firm SCA, will be the site of a new retail outlet following the submission of a planning application by property development company, S Harrison.
Working with the site’s owners Perio News Limited, and Lidl UK GmbH, S Harrison plans to deliver the project within the next 18 months, with work due to start this autumn.
More than 30 construction and 40 retail jobs will be created, and the supermarket will open during summer 2019.
Chris Hale, from S Harrison, said: “With a high quality contemporary store design, which is easily accessible, the new Lidl will also have 130 car parking spaces.
“Providing local people with a spacious, attractive shopping centre, and a full range of competitively priced products, as well as an in-store bakery, the redevelopment has been welcomed by the local community.”
S Harrison has recently completed the refurbishment of Hunter House, a building on Goodramgate, where the firm has created two retail units on the ground floor – one of which is leased to Savers.
Lidl is a global supermarket chain which operates over 10,000 stores across Europe and USA.
The James Street store will be the second to open in York.
