Football club for all ages scores with funding

A community football club has secured a donation from a leading housebuilder to update its facilities.

Edinburgh South Community Football Club was selected to receive £500 from Persimmon Homes East Scotland as part of the company’s Community Champions scheme, which supports charities, clubs and individuals across the region.

The football club set up in 1969 has gained popularity over the years with over 650 members and 140 coaches and officials. It attracts players aged five through to people in their golden years who play walking football.
Paul Doig, the club’s Community Coach applied for the funding to replace the toilet block at the Drum football pitches. “We are thrilled to receive this support from Persimmon. The club has been looking for help with the renovation of the toilet block and just by chance I noticed that they are building at their new Lang Loan development just a couple of miles away so thought I would ask if they could help,” he said. “Support like this is hard to come by and we can’t thank Persimmon enough for their donation.” The club offers a fun and safe environment for both male and female players of all ages living in and around South Edinburgh. Jim Kirkpatrick, managing director at Persimmon homes East Scotland, said: “It’s very exciting to see a football club that attracts such a wide membership so close to one of our developments.
“Community football clubs like Edinburgh South are the type of organisation that our Community Champions initiative was set up to support and we hope that the funding will help them to improve their facilities.” Each month the builder donates up to £2,000 to community groups across the region. This also happens across Persimmon’s other 30 operating areas, meaning up to £60,000 is dished out every single month – a total of £720,000 a year, and more than £2million since the scheme started back in 2015.
