South East Dance present Our City Dances
The flagship event of our community engagement programme The Welcome Project
South East Dance (SED) is delighted to announce the inaugural Our City Dances, a two day festival of dance events, workshops, flashmobs and performances as part of The Welcome Project, the lead in community engagement programme introducing the people of Brighton and Hove to our new home, The Dance Space.
Over Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd July we’ll be taking over the Queens Park area of Brighton with the help of our partners at the Tarner project, staging a day of events at the Tarner festival on Saturday and across the Queens Park area on Sunday. Our City Dances festival will bring participants, local residents, professional dance artists and companies together for a carnival of performances, free to attend, highly accessible and appropriate for all ages. Shaped by The Welcome Project steering committee, our go-to team of dedicated local residents, artists and influencers, the programme represents the breadth of interest in dance and the extraordinary pool of creative talent that lies within the city.
South East Dance is determined to make The Dance Space a centre of world excellence for the aspiring or professional, for the curious or the virtuoso, where people of all backgrounds and abilities can come together and experience the transformational benefits dance can offer. So in preparation, we’re welcoming people to The Dance Space through The Welcome Project way in advance of doors opening in early 2020.
Our City Dance’s highpoints include Tim Casson’s invitation to create The Dance We made, Brighton’s Streetfunk crews upskilling your Lock, Krump and Pop in their post-performance workshop while little ones can get up close with Second Hand Dance’s insecty micro world of Grass. The festival winds up with Zoielogic Dance Theatre’s deconstructive vehicular crescendo Ride appropriately sited in the thoroughfare of Victoria Gardens. It’s a Brighton takeover of dance.
Cath James, Programme Director at South East Dance said:
“We’re hugely excited to be hosting Our City Dances and rolling out the work of South East Dance to the people of Brighton and Hove. Our City Dances is a celebration of the community coming together around the universal language of dance and signals a new era of creativity for the city to tap into as we move toward the opening of The Dance Space”
