Cash boost for cancer support charity

A Glasgow-based charity that supports people with cancer and their loved ones has been selected to receive £1,000 from Persimmon Homes West Scotland.

Maggie’s Glasgow, based in Gartnavel General Hospital, provides emotional and practical support for people living with the effects of cancer, their friends, family and carers.

The service is self-funded relying on fundraising, voluntary donations and community grants. The money raised funds a full programme of free expert support including drop in with cancer specialists plus a range of workshops and classes.

Maggie’s Glasgow have around 18,000 people living with cancer from across Glasgow and the West of Scotland.
Morven Baigent, centre fundraiser at Maggie’s Centres, said: “The whole team at Maggie’s Glasgow is so grateful for the support of Persimmon’s Community Champions Fund. £1,000 will go such a long way to help those affected by a cancer diagnosis. “Many find the environment in Maggie’s is very different to the necessary clinical environment of the hospital and that’s where Maggie’s aims to make, what is a very emotional experience, a little easier. We offer both practical and emotional support through yoga, nutrition workshops and benefits advice with people choosing as much or as little interaction as they prefer.” Maggie’s Glasgow is housed in the grounds of the Beaston Cancer Hospital which serves 60 per cent of cancer patients in Scotland. Doug Law, managing director at Persimmon Homes West Scotland, said: “Maggie’s Glasgow is such an important outlet for people around our area at a very vulnerable time in their life.

“They work incredibly hard and offer a huge amount of compassion and we wanted to help keep this essential service going. We’re honoured to contribute to a fantastic cause.” The company’s Community Champions scheme is a national programme where charities and groups can apply for funding up to the value of £1,000 to match cash they have already raised themselves. Since its launch in 2015 it has raised more than £1 million for causes around the UK.

Persimmon Homes West Scotland is currently building a range of news homes just seven miles north of Maggie’s Glasgow. The Boulevard features two, three, four and five-bedroom houses and two-bedroom apartments. For more information about The Boulevard or to apply for funding visit the Persimmon Homes website.
