Chorley care residents get ringside view for wrestling wars
Thrill-seeking residents of a Chorley retirement home get to switch their usual Saturday night for an action-packed wrestling fund raiser, organised for their benefit.
Two local wrestling academies The Lancashire Wrestling Federation and Futureshock will be going head to head in the upcoming ‘Academy Wars’ show, after residents of Buckshaw Retirement Village wanted to recapture memories of childhood thrills.
Residents have been reflecting on childhood interests as part of an initiative by the retirement home to encourage more sharing of happy memories and good times. The upcoming show, which will be hosted at the Buckshaw Village Community Centre on August 4 (6pm till 9pm), is the brainchild of resident John Dowling.
He reflected on his childhood interests and shared with staff how much he enjoyed the thrill and suspense that came with watching a wrestling match. He also disclosed that he hadn’t experienced a live show. Staff then took the opportunity to arrange the upcoming fund raising wrestling show for John and his fellow residents.
Wrestlers from two local academies will put on the event and help sell tickets, which will ensure a jam-packed occasion with plenty of non-stop action. Money raised through the sales of a specially designed t-shirt and refreshments will be donated back to the retirement village so that they can continue to invest in new equipment and experiences.
Chris Durnan, market square coordinator at The Lodge said: “I enjoyed hearing that John was a wrestling fan. I’m delighted that we have been able to organise such a thrilling event that means not only John can enjoy his first live show, but he can whilst accompanied by his friends and family too. I’m really looking forward to it.”
Lisa Barnes, regional director for the Hica Group, said: “This is a brilliant opportunity for John and our residents to experience memories and interests of their past.
“We always embrace ways in which our residents can relive their previous interests and hobbies. Staff and the academies have done a fantastic job in organising this event, which I’m sure will be thoroughly enjoyable.”
The event is family friendly and open to members of the public. More information and tickets can be found at: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/thelancashirewrestlingfederation/
