Airshow display teams test skies over Sunderland

Display planes took to the skies above Sunderland this morning (July 27) for test flights ahead of the city’s 2018 airshow.

Aircraft and aerial display teams are arriving in the region to prepare for the show, which takes place this weekend.

First to practise manoeuvres were the Blades display team and the OV-10 Bronco.

Some volunteers joined them as passengers, including Sunderland City Council Deputy Leader Cllr Michael Mordey.

Cllr Mordey said: “I’ll be the first to admit I was really nervous, but being on board was an unforgettable experience.

“Flying at such speed makes you appreciate even more the amazing skills of the pilots, and what physical and mental demands they face up in the air.”

Cllr Mordey was up in the air to help raise money for the Mayoral Charities of the Mayor of Sunderland, Cllr Lynda Scanlan.

He continued: “I’d like to thank the Blades for giving me this amazing opportunity to raise the profile of the Mayoral Charities and hopefully a little money on their behalf, and all the aircrews and pilots who make the Sunderland Airshow the fantastic event that it is

“I am very proud this year that Sunderland Airshow also gives us the opportunity to come together to celebrate the Centenary of the RAF, to who we all owe so much.”

Chief Supt Sarah Pitt, Northumbria Police’s Silver Commander for the Sunderland Airshow, commented: “Here today standing alongside the aircraft as they prepare to take off, makes you realise what magnificent machines they are, and how skilled, highly trained and brave the pilots are who fly them.

“I hope everyone is looking forward to the Airshow, and will help us ensure that we are all able to enjoy it.”
