Work to start on community leisure centre
Work is due to start imminently on the construction of a new community leisure centre in Wigan, on the site of the former Standish Court Golf Course.
The two-storey centre is being built by Persimmon Homes as part of a new housing development being delivered jointly by Persimmon Homes and Morris Homes.
Construction is due to start within the next four weeks, with the project scheduled to take around 12 to 18 months.
Once complete, the facility will be operated by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, and will consist of: • Health & Fitness - gym with c. 40 stations, fitness studio, changing rooms • Pitches - 3G football pitches, 5-a-side and 7-a-side, floodlighting and outdoor changing spaces • Multi-Use Games Area - Sport England standard MUGA for mini-tennis, tennis, netball, etc • Allotments are also being provided as part of the recreational offer within the development
The plans include a total of 93 car parking spaces, including six disabled spaces. Mark Cook, Regional Managing Director for Persimmon Homes & Charles Church, said: “We are delighted to announce that the leisure centre at Standish is on its way.
“We are confident that once complete, the centre will enhance not only the housing development but also the existing local area, contributing significantly to the quality of life through this high quality, modern building and the new facilities. A landscaping scheme is proposed to integrate the leisure centre development within its surroundings.”
Persimmon Homes’ and Charles Church’s development of new homes at The Fairways and The Links on Rectory Lane in Standish offers a range of beautifully designed two, three and four bedroom properties ranging from traditional to executive in style, suiting first time buyers, professional couples and families.
Nick Uttley, Regional Managing Director for Morris Homes, said: “We are very proud to be part of delivering this facility for the local community. Morris Homes has been building homes for almost 70 years and has been part of delivering homes and infrastructure in the Standish area for a long time. Having the opportunity to contribute further is very exciting.
“Morris’ development of new homes at Churchfields on Rectory Lane provides an impressive range of two, three and four bedroom homes that blend our traditional style and character with high specification equally suited for people looking to get on the ladder or move up it.”
