Transport Secretary opens Leeds Bradford’s transformed departure lounge

The Secretary of State for Transport has officially opened the first phase of Leeds Bradford Airport’s multi-million pound redevelopment.

The project has seen the entire departure lounge transformed with extra seating and an expanded retail-leisure offer, including new shops, cafes, restaurants, bars and lounge space.

Chris Grayling MP was at the airport today (August 2) to see the works first hand and host a private roundtable with key stakeholders on issues facing the region.

He said: “Leeds Bradford Airport is an important global gateway to Yorkshire, and this multi-million pound development will provide passengers from all over the world with an exceptional travelling experience to and from the region.

“We are working closely with Leeds Bradford Airport to ensure it has what it needs to offer greater choices for passengers secure further international routes and deliver more investment opportunities as we leave the EU.”

He continued: “And today I welcomed discussions with local businesses and leaders on our transport investment strategy for the region, and how we can work together to open up Yorkshire to new global opportunities.”

David Laws, chief executive of Leeds Bradford, commented: “We are delighted to welcome The Rt Hon Chris Grayling MP to the airport to officially open phase one of our terminal redevelopment.

“We have some exciting plans for the airport and want the people of our thriving region to get behind their airport to help us move forward. The more people use the airport the more successful we can be.”

He added: “Work continues to improve our route offering for both business and leisure services while we are now working on our plans for phase two of the terminal infrastructure which we hope to commence later this year on a new state of the art arrivals experience.”
