Housebuilder sponsors Coventry’s Donkey Derby to help mark 50th year
A regional housebuilder has agreed to sponsor the 50th Donkey Derby in Coventry this year after donating £1,000 to the city’s Leofric Lions. Persimmon Homes Central donated the money through its Community Champions scheme to the Coventry Leofric Lions, which supports charities and those in need in the Coventry area. The scheme invites local groups and charities to bid for a match-funded donation of up to £1,000. The Leofric Lions organises the annual Lions Donkey Derby and Charities Fair in the city’s War Memorial Park, which this year will be held on September 22. The event regularly attracts around 5,000 people and allows charities to fundraise by running their own stalls. Spokesman David Robinson said: “This is our 50th year hosting the popular Donkey Derby and we want to mark this milestone with new attractions and hope to raise a record sum to help local charities. “We have approached the local business community to attract sponsorship for the event and decided to apply to become a Community Champion as Persimmon Homes is a well-known national housebuilder with significant current involvement in Coventry. We are delighted that they have decided to support us.” Persimmon Homes Central recently launched a new development, Bluebell Wood, in Willenhall, and is also building at Paragon Park, Foleshill Road, Weavers Wharf, in Little Heath, and at Shilton Place, Shilton Lane. Sarah Read, Head of Sales at Persimmon Homes Central, said: “We are delighted to be able to support the Coventry Leofric Lions in this way, especially as it is such a special year for the event and the Donkey Derby. “If people were unsuccessful in their Community Champions application, we urge them to visit the Persimmon Homes website and to try again and hopefully they will become our next recipient.”
