London Luton Airport welcomes over one million passengers in record summer month

London Luton Airport (LLA) has celebrated its busiest-ever July, as 1.67m passengers travelled through the airport.

This marks a 3.1 per cent increase compared with last year, making July the airport’s 18th consecutive month that over one million passengers have passed through LLA.

As the summer holidays begin, LLA has revealed some of the quirky items passengers have wanted to take in their hand luggage. One passenger wanted to know whether they could travel with a bonsai tree while another enquired about travelling with a set of frying pans.

Kimberly Kennedy, head of terminal operations at LLA, said: “It’s always fascinating to discover what people want to travel with and carry in their hand luggage.

“Making the checks about what you can and can’t take on board an aircraft before leaving home is always my best advice.”

The start of the busy summer period coincided with LLA’s 80th anniversary - the airport celebrated throughout the month with staff, passengers, and the local community.

Celebrations included the launch of a limited-edition birthday Campari cocktail from Oriel Grande Brasserie inspired by Lorraine Chase, and goodie bags and macarons for passengers.

Nick Barton, CEO of LLA, added: “July was a milestone month for LLA, as we celebrated 80 years of growth and reached the next stage of our £160m redevelopment.

“Our transformation will mean that passengers can enjoy smoother and quicker journeys, and allow more people to travel to new destinations.

“We look forward to welcoming even more passengers throughout the rest of the summer period as people get away for a well-earned break.”
