South Yorkshire director achieves top marks for prestigious qualification

South Yorkshire director Vickie Brown has achieved one of the highest marks in the country for a prestigious qualification.

The finance director at Barnsley-based Distinction Doors has attained one of the top three results this year for the Institute of Directors’ chartered director course.

Chartered director is an exclusive qualification under Royal Charter for the world’s best directors.

Vickie will learn if she is the country’s top newly qualified director on 18 October when the IoD holds its Director of the Year finals at The Royal Horticultural Halls, London.

The chartered director award recognises the best newly qualified director of the past 12 months. The winner is selected on the marks and grades achieved through the exam and interview process.

Vickie said: “I am thrilled that my hard work has been rewarded. As well as the exam, I had to produce a written portfolio, undertake training with a cohort of fellow directors and undergo an interview process.

“It is the best training I have done throughout my professional career. Everything I have learned can be immediately applied to what I do daily within my business. It focuses your mind. As a shareholder and finance director, I am responsible for driving the strategy of the business as well as the day-to-day financial activity.

Home improvements group Distinction Doors has a turnover of £42m and employs 147 people. Chief executive Andrew Fowlds is also a chartered director.

The firm will host a chartered director event with the IoD in early 2019 to encourage more directors to sign up for the course.

Natalie Sykes, regional director of the IoD in Yorkshire and the North East, who has also completed the chartered director qualification, said: “This is quite an achievement by Vickie. Those who study for chartered director must commit considerable time and effort while still running their business. We are delighted to have her on our South Yorkshire committee and look forward to our chartered director event early next year.”
