Contract awarded for affordable homes in Peterlee

A north east based construction company has picked up the contract to build 12 new affordable homes in Peterlee. County Durham Housing Group has appointed T Manners & Sons Ltd to construct a dozen three-bedroom family houses in Matterdale Road, as part of its £54m new-build programme. The new homes are the latest element of a 545-property new-build plan by County Durham Housing Group. They are being built on a vacant site, which has previously been used for housing. Planning approval for the development was granted in April, with work due to start on site this autumn. All 12 homes in Matterdale Road will be available under the ‘Rent to Buy’ scheme. Rent to Buy is a government scheme designed to ease the transition from renting to buying a home by providing subsidised rent; usually around 20% below the market rate. County Durham Housing Group Development Manager, Tom Winter, said: “The Matterdale Road project will be our first in the Peterlee area to begin work on site. We should be seeing shovels in the ground within weeks. “The new homes have been conceived to closely match demand in this part of Peterlee. The Rent to Buy opportunities will help local families move up the housing ladder, in an affordable way, and contribute towards the long-term future of the community.” The Matterdale Road development is the third new-build project to be undertaken by T Manners & Sons Ltd for County Durham Housing Group. The long-established Bishop Auckland-based company has already completed bungalows for the group in St Helen Auckland and the remote Weardale village of Rookhope earlier this year. Simon Manners, Joint MD of the family-owned company, said. “We are delighted to continue our relationship with County Durham Housing Group by developing these new homes.” Work on County Durham Housing Group’s affordable housing programme began during 2017 and will continue into 2021. The high-specification properties are helping to meet demand for affordable homes in communities stretching from rural Weardale to the Durham coast. Tenants will move into the new homes in Matterdale Road during 2019. More than 60 families have already moved into new County Durham Housing Group properties since the new-build programme started. Work on 40 homes in Crook is also approaching completion.
