£21m South Shields transport scheme to be discussed in committee talks next week

An update on the new transport interchange taking shape in South Shields town centre will be up for discussion when a committee meets next week (Tuesday September 11).

Work is underway on the £21m facility with members of the public now able to see the steel structure being put in place. Once complete, the new Transport Interchange will house a bus station and relocated Metro station.

The development forms part of South Tyneside Council’s wider £100m South Shields regeneration plan and is being delivered by Muse Developments, Nexus and construction contractor, Bowmer and Kirkland.

The council’s Place Select Committee will be given an overview of how the project is progressing at their meeting next week.

Chairman and councillor, Audrey McMillan, said: “It is wonderful to see the Transport Interchange taking shape.

“South Shields is undergoing such significant transformation at the moment and with this development forming Phase Two of the ambitious masterplan, it’s a key step forward in the council’s vision for a revitalised town centre.

“We’re looking forward to hearing more about the new metro station and bus concourse, which once complete, will not only provide improved access but a striking new state-of-the-art point of arrival for both residents and visitors to the town.”

The Transport Interchange is expected to be completed next summer with the demolition of the existing Metro station to follow.
