Export Hub to help Sunderland businesses target North American contracts

An Export Hub roadshow offering tips on expanding into North America is coming to Sunderland.

The masterclass, hosted by the Department for International Trade (DIT), will give Tyne and Wear businesses an insight into exporting across the Atlantic.

It will focus on specific sectors, including food and drink, and offer guidance on entering the market.

Representatives of DIT North America, including Head of Trade and Investments for South East USA Rebecca Mowat, will be on hand to give advice on succeeding in North America.

The Export Hub is touring the UK as part of the DIT’s Exporting is GREAT campaign.

One North East firm to benefit from DIT support in the US is Skignz, a Stockton-based creator of augmented reality (AR) platforms for mobile phones.

The company worked closely with DIT advisors on the ground in the US, iidentifying potential partners and buyers. Skignz is now exploring opportunities to provide software for major American telecoms providers and sports leagues.

The DIT’s Head of North East, David Coppock, said: “The relationship between the North East of England and North America has never been stronger.

“In fact, exports to the region in the first quarter of 2018 alone totalled an impressive £303.3m.”

He continued: “North America is the most competitive economy in the world, so events like this are designed to provide practical tips and advice that will help businesses navigate the market.

“With each state in North America comes with its own unique challenges including differing tastes, trade regulations and taxation. However, our International Trade Advisers are on hand to help firms overcome these barriers and start or expand their exports to this market.”

The Export Hub will arrive at the Stadium of Light next Thursday (September 20).
