Local Companies Head Back To School With £4M Extension

Work is fast approaching completion on a major new £4million extension and refurbishment programme at Park Spring Primary School near Pudsey at Swinnow.

Leeds based Adept Civil and Structural Consulting Engineers has designed the extension’s 50-tonne steel frame and its foundations. Clugston Construction is the main contractor and Watson Batty Architects has designed the new building, which covers 1,035 square metres and is spread over two floors, consisting of a new nursery, reception and four key stage 2 classrooms.

A large part of the existing school has also been refurbished, with improvements made to existing facilities, and the work will enable the school, which is run by Leeds City Council, to increase its capacity from 315 to 420 pupils, who are aged between 3 and 11 years old.

Matthew Ramsden, a director at Adept, says: “This has been a superb project to work on that will shape the future of a well-known local school. The work followed a stringent timescale and to keep pace there was insufficient lead in time for the steel to be erected in the normal construction sequence. As a result the ground slab was constructed before the steel frame had been fabricated in order for the project to keep to program.

“The extension has a steel framing system, rather than a traditional inner leaf of blockwork behind the external façade, which further enhanced efficiency during the construction programme.”

Barry Sandiford-Mitchell from Clugston Construction adds: “Park Spring Primary School is an important part of the local community in Swinnow so being involved in its transformation is hugely rewarding. Most of the work has been carried out while the school has been operational and it is testament to our impressive track record working throughout the education sector, that the project is due to complete on time and within budget.”
