Worcester homeless hostel receives cash boost from housebuilder

A homeless centre in Worcester can add the finishing touch to its newly launched kitchen garden, thanks to a £500 donation from a leading regional housebuilder.

St Paul’s Hostel Worcester was handed the cash donation to purchase a new shed for the garden by Persimmon Homes South Midlands after applying for funding through its Community Champions scheme.

The hostel works with homeless people across the region, providing care that seeks to understand and remedy the cause of homelessness. The charity rejuvenated a plot of land in the hostel grounds earlier in the year and launched its kitchen garden facility in July this year and Persimmon’s £500 donation will purchase a new shed for the facility.

Jonathan Sutton, CEO of the organisation, said: “We’re so grateful to Persimmon Homes for the generous donation.

“The project is part of the hostel’s new approach towards dealing with the causation of homelessness in our residents, which focuses on understanding trauma from their past. It is hoped residents will benefit from tending to the garden and it already is providing free produce for the hostel canteen.

“Since its launch in July, it has been a great success and we’re delighted to be able to add the finishing touch – our new shed. We have sourced the shed from D&J Timber, a local business in Worcester, who will deliver and erect it next week.”

Carol Selway, sales director for Persimmon Homes South Midlands, said: “St Paul’s Hostel is an extraordinary facility and you cannot put a price on the support they give to homeless and vulnerable people in the local community.

“Everyone here greatly admires their work and it was an easy decision to support them and do our bit to help such a worthy and well-respected cause.”

Persimmon Homes South Midlands is currently building in Pershore at its Wyre Meadows development. New development Whittington Walk, off Swinesherd Way in Spetchley is coming soon and will provide a range of two, three, four and five-bedroom homes in a fantastic location.
