Great Pall-Ex Bake Off raises a showstopping sum for Macmillan
Pall-Ex staff swapped wheels for whisks when the logistics firm hosted its own Great British Bake Off competition to raise money for Macmillan.
The Ellistown-based company raised an impressive £124 for the cancer charity’s coffee morning appeal thanks to a contest judged by former Great British Bake Off: The Professionals contestant, Marta Child, and Pall-Ex’s resident foodie, Hub Coordinator, Toby Iliffe.
Staff battled it out to be named Star Baker by the pair, who had a tough job taste testing 10 creations to decide the winning entry.
Pall-Ex’s operations support advisor, Amy Marsden’s inspiring showstopper – a salted caramel, Prosecco cake – was crowned the winner, earning her a dinner party cooked in her own home by Masterchef contestant, Holly Bilous-Jones, and a John Lewis voucher worth £100.
The winning recipe will also be hosted on Pall-Ex’s website for others to use. Abby Langley, Pall-Ex’s marketing manager, who created a mystical pink sweet shop cake, scooped the runner up prize of a £50 John Lewis voucher.
Toby comments: “It was a difficult task determining the soggy bottoms from the showstoppers, but Amy’s effort excelled in every area. It’s been a great experience getting everyone at Pall-Ex involved and to see so many entries for the competition. We are delighted to have raised such a significant sum for Macmillan.”
Professional baker Marta, who owns Bom Bom Patisserie in Loughborough, comments: “It has been a real pleasure to support the Pall-Ex team with their fundraising activity and it’s fantastic to see so many staff members taking part.
“The judging was really tough, but in the end we were looking for a cake with real wow-factor; an impressive mix of decoration and taste, as well as originality, is what helped Amy to take the coveted title of Star Baker.”
Amy comments: “The idea of raising money for Macmillan is something I will always fully support. Baking and cooking is a skill I’ve learnt from my mum, which I thoroughly enjoy doing, and I’m still completely shocked to be chosen as the winner!”
The company chose a Great British Bake Off-style event to raise money for charity due to the logistics industry playing a key role in keeping Britain’s bakery sector baking.
