Student employers celebrate ISE’s 50th anniversary

The great and good of student recruitment came together yesterday (20 September) at the University of London to mark the 50th anniversary of the Institute of Student Employers (ISE).

More than a hundred delegates from business, student recruitment and university heard insights to some of the industry’s latest research projects. ISE also presented a preview of its Annual Student Recruitment Survey, which is published on Monday (24 September 2018).

Former ISE Chair, Kate Orebi Gann spoke of the ISE’s long history and achievements alongside former CEO, Carl Gilleard while current CEO, Stephen Isherwood cited the importance of data for the future of the industry:

“We are heavily focused on data and research today. The days when HR could avoid numbers are long gone - if they ever did exist. The analysis we now provide enables better decision making leading to improved organisational performance.”

Speaking on the importance of sharing information, Dr Bob Gilworth, Director of The Careers Group, University of London, and President of the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services said:

“I have been a university member of the ISE for as long as I can remember, so I’m delighted to support the institute by hosting their 50th celebrations here at Senate House. There is shared interest between university careers services and employers to support graduates in making the right career choices, particularly in the use of data.”

The Guardian’s Ami Stewart explained the importance of understanding Generation Z in its latest research:

“Some 16 to 24 year olds are entering work for the first time while others are making decisions about further education. For the majority of the time we find this group in conversations behind closed doors, and there’s no answer that Google can’t give them, so understanding how to reach this group is fundamental.”
