ASCG race to raise over £10k for Overgate Hospice at Soapbox event

Global supply chain business, Advanced Supply Chain Group (ASCG), has announced sponsorship of the Triangle Soap Box Race.

Organised by John Crossley, the event, which takes place at the Triangle Cricket Club, Sowerby Bridge on 29th September, will see teams of two race their homemade soapbox cars in aid of raising funds for Overgate Hospice. In what is its inaugural year, event organisers have set their sights on raising over £10,000 for the charity.

Over 40 entries from the local area have already signed up to take part in the extravaganza including businesses Pickles Architecture, Hanson Plywood, Flow Quip, The Hogs Head, Halifax Metals, The Old Bridge Inn and Birtwells Ground Works. ASCG have also entered a cart which will be raced by CEO, Mike Danby MBE and Commercial Director, Ben Balfour.

Entry to the event will be free and additional family-friendly entertainment will be provided including space hoppers, juggling, a bouncy castle, football, unicycles and a bucking bronco amongst other stalls. There will also be live music, a bar and food including pizzas, a barbeque and a cake stand ran by the Women’s Institute.

Commented on the event, Mike said: “As well as living in the area ourselves, we employ hundreds of people from the local community and it’s really important to us to give something back and be part of initiatives like this which make a difference – and have a bit of fun. Preparations into our soapbox are well underway and we’re looking forward to seeing the other competitors at the start line.”

Prizes will be awarded for the fastest speed, best appearance of the soap box and team appearance as well as the highly-coveted ‘idiot of the day’ award. Entrants are also encouraged to raise sponsorship with all proceeds going directly to Overgate Hospice.

The Halifax-based hospice provides care and support for patients and their families and carers. An independent charity, Overgate need to raise £6,800 every day to run. It’s partly funded by Calderdale Clinical Commissioning Group and has 12 shops across the local area, but depends heavily on individuals, companies, organisations fundraising at events such as this.

As part of ASCG’s wider corporate social responsibility, the business is committed to supporting charitable initiatives which this year has seen the business back charity bike ride, the Wharfedale Ton, take part in ASOS Foundation’s charity golf day, raise over £4,000 for Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice and £2,000 for Lakelands Hospice. The business also supports Endometriosis UK with fundraising efforts across the team including Benjamin Shaw who ran the Brighton Marathon and Carole Finn who coordinates fundraising events including the annual charity ball in Leeds.
