Energy employees organise fundraising day in aid of Breast Cancer Now

Employees at EDF Energy, customer service centre at Doxford Park came together to raise funds for a colleague completing the Great North Run on behalf of Breast Cancer Now.

2018 entrant Charlotte Carlin, from Sunderland, ran to honour her mother who’s currently undergoing breast cancer treatment. Charlotte aimed to raise £1000 for the charity and due to the generosity of her colleagues has now exceeded the target.

Lisa Sidney, a team manager at Doxford Park and Doxford Charity Champion helped Charlotte organise a fundraising day that took place a few weeks prior to the GNR.

Charity Champions are a group of staff members at EDF Energy who along with their standard day to day roles help plan, run and manage charity fundraising events.

The day which included an opportunity for employees dress down, a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses, a quiz and a bake sale that sold out in under 90 minutes, raised a total of £1265.13.

Since the completion of the run and further sponsors Charlotte has now raised a total of £1725 for Breast Cancer Now.

Charlotte said: “I’m really grateful to Lisa and the Charity Champions for organising and running the fundraising day with me, they really helped make the day go smoothly.

“I’d also like to thank my colleagues for their support with activities during the day and their kind donations. This year I ran the GNR with my two brothers in honour of my mam who is currently undergoing breast cancer treatment.

“The run was challenging and emotional, but I enjoyed it and I am very proud of what I’ve managed to raise for a charity who are currently playing a crucial role in my families lives right now.”

EDF Energy teamed up with Breast Cancer Now in 2016 and has so far raised a staggering £308,500 in employee donations and EDF Energy has added £100,000 in matched funding for the charity.

Kevin Gatens, head of customer service North East said: “Our employees are passionate about fundraising and always think of new ways to raise awareness.

“I’m proud of Charlotte and grateful to Lisa and The Charity Champions for organising such a successful event. Fundraising efforts provide us with excellent opportunity to get together, team build and to involve the local community.”
