Leading Home-buying Service Reveals the Psychological Pitfalls of Selling

Anyone who has ever undertaken a house move will agree that it is, without a doubt, one of the most challenging and drawn-out life events that anyone can go through.

Over the past 20 years, the power of technology has provided a platform for the ‘property portal’ - bringing the details of thousands of available homes to our screens in a matter of seconds. However, whilst technology may have completely revolutionised the way that we advertise properties, it hasn’t made much of a mark on the process of selling.

With British consumers growing more and more accustomed to ‘time-saving’ services and technologies, which help to simplify day-to-day tasks, how is the lengthy process of selling affecting people’s willingness to sell?

A new national survey commissioned by the UK’s leading home-buying company, WeBuyAnyHome.com, has found that a shockingly large proportion of Brits are reluctant to sell their property despite being ready to move on due to the stress that comes with selling a home.

After being questioned about their property preferences and eagerness to move home, a third of the research respondents stated that they would rather stay in their current home than move to another house, because they do not want to face the stresses and pressures that come with selling a property – even if it means missing out on a better property or their dream home.

Delving deeper into the general public’s psyche, the survey also quizzed respondents about the reasons why they would find selling stressful and choose to remain in their current home.

Of those surveyed, almost half of respondents said that the stress of selling a home in the past has damaged their relationship with a loved one or a family member, and a third said that the process has made them feel physically or mentally unwell, which has deterred them from wanting to move again in the future.

Elliot Castle, Founder of WeBuyAnyHome.com, says: “It is clear from these findings that the various pressures and challenges which come with selling a property are causing a lot of stress for homeowners, and are dissuading them from moving home altogether.

It’s also interesting to see the different emotions that men and women experience when selling a house, and how these are impacting their decision to move.
